Participating in Worship
We welcome you. Come and worship with us!
The following information may help you as you observe and participate in our worship service. It is our communal means for offering our thanks and praise to God by lifting our voices in words and song and for expressing our love for our friends and neighbors.
Upon Entering
The ushers will also hand you our worship booklet. It includes an Order of Service which will guide you through our worship. The printed material in the booklet tells you when it is appropriate to stand. (If it is uncomfortable to stand, please feel free to remain seated.) Hymns are included in the worship booklet.
Communion
We celebrate the Holy Eucharist, a communion service which places us in direct relationship with Christ and renews our spiritual life. The first part of our service is centered on the readings of God's word. We begin with opening sentences, a collect (prayer), readings from the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) and the Epistles of the New Testament, a Gospel reading by the deacon or priest, a sermon, affirmation of faith (the Creed), prayers of the people, confession, and exchange of God's peace offered to one another by shaking hands or embracing one another. The second part of the service is centered on the bread and wine at the altar. We offer these gifts and the gifts of our lives, give thanks for them, break the bread, and come to receive communion. Hymns are sung throughout the service.
Communion is served in two kinds - bread and wine. We serve wine in a common cup (chalice). First, we receive the bread by lifting our crossed hand so that the minister can place the bread in them. When the chalice of wine is offered, please assist by gently holding the base of the cup and guiding it to your lips.
If you prefer not to drink from the cup, you may hold your bread until the chalice minister offers the wine. Simply dip the bread in the chalice. You may choose to take only the bread, and this is perfectly acceptable.
All who seek God are welcome at this table. If you wish to receive communion, you are welcome to come forward. Ushers assist in directing people to the front. If you have questions about how to receive communion, ask the usher. If you are unable to come forward and wish to receive communion, please let an usher know, and the Eucharistic ministers will come to you.
Our Offering
At the time of the offering, members bring forward the bread and wine for our communion, and ushers pass the offering plates to the congregation. Contributions in any amount are always welcome. It is also a time to offer silently to God our joys and our griefs. An anthem or hymn may be sung during the offering.
